Alkebulan Dance

Title of the show: Celestial Echoes

Échos Célestes, a contemporary dance piece created in 2024 by the Ivorian company Alkebulan Danse, delves into the human obsession with the gaze of others. Through powerful and percussive choreography, five dancers explore our fascination with this elusive presence, questioning self-perception through the eyes of others and reflecting on our connection to the divine, our place in the universe, and the mysteries of origin and destiny. Are we merely fragments of life or something closer to the sacred? Through expressive and poetic body language, the work offers a meditation on heritage, transmission, and the traces we leave for future generations.

Alkebulan Danse boldly bridges traditional Ivorian and African dance forms with contemporary and academic techniques. Led by renowned dancer, choreographer, and pedagogue Henri Michel Haddad, the company draws on a rich international background, with collaborations including Anne-Marie Porras, Ingeborg Liptay, Ramon Oller, and Ballet Preljocaj. Having returned to his native Côte d’Ivoire, Haddad is dedicated to passing on his expertise to the next generation and energizing the local choreographic scene.

Comprised of five distinctive performers, Alkebulan Danse embodies a vibrant, hybrid language where tradition and modernity meet in constant dialogue.
