K(-A-)O is a contemporary dance solo by Kenji Shinohe that incisively explores the impact of digital technology on our inner emotional life. Structured in three evocative phases, the piece interrogates the erosion of genuine feelings in the era of smartphones and constant digital interaction. The dancer begins masked and robotic, moving to a techno-cold pop soundtrack that mirrors the mechanical and detached aspects of modern life. Gradually, he unveils the humanity of his expressions and gestures, evolving toward an organic, vulnerable, and intensely passionate performance.
By confronting the superficiality of emojis and digital shorthand with the richness and complexity of real emotions, the work challenges the audience to reconnect with authentic feeling. In its climactic moments, the performer fully immerses himself among the spectators, creating a shared, intimate space that transforms observation into participation. K(-A-)O becomes a visceral call to reclaim the depth, authenticity, and full spectrum of human emotion, reminding us of the power of presence in an increasingly virtual world.
